While I was looking for project inspiration to use up the mohair silk lace leftover from my Culumus Blouse, I came across the Petite Knit Holiday Slipover pattern. Instead of using the mohair silk lace, I thought it’d be perfect to use my Rowan Big Wool that I bought about a year ago! The pattern calls for 2 strands of aran + 1 strand of lace to make a super bulky weight, but I thought I’d just use the super bulky Big Wool!
I used 10mm needles for the body and 8mm for the rib because I don’t have 9mm needles. My tension was a bit off, so I knitted 2 fewer rows for the back, front, and body sections. I made a size XS, I was a little worried that it might be too small at first, but once the armhole ribs are done, it fits just right.
I used tubular bind off for the neck edge and hems, but just normal bind off for the armhole because I think the armholes would look neater if they’re bound off tightly. I can never remember the steps for tubular bind off so I need to watch YouTube before I do it. I always go back to the Purl Soho instruction:
Other than the bind off, the vest is pretty straightforward and knitted up so quickly. I finished it within a week! It’s such a satisfying make. I love the split hem, I sewed some invisible stitches to secure the splits, which is an optional step suggested in the pattern.
I was wearing it with my Clyde Work Pants and an RTW tee shirt. It will also work perfectly over dresses, too. I love this vest, it gave me just enough warmth on a mild winter day like today.
I’ve never modified a knitting pattern but I’d imagine knitting this into a dress! I think it would look so cool – if only I know how to do it!
