Purple Spots Hughes Dress
I finished another garment made using my own fabric design! It always feels great to see a finished product because the process of creating a design takes so long. I’m so so pleased with this perfect purple dress!
This is a pastel rainbow spots print with a perfect purple background 😆. I had it printed on cotton oxford by Next State, which is a medium weight cotton. Not very drapey but it’s comfortable to wear and very easy to sew with. This print, along with a few other colourways are available in my Spoonflower shop.
I made another Friday Pattern Company Hughes Dress, because I loved my first one a lot. I managed to squeeze all the lining pieces out of the fabric as well, except for the skirt lining. I cut 2 rectangular pieces of facing instead, which works just fine.
I love everything about this dress, the length, the lace-up back, and the gathered sleeves. The sleeves hold their shape with this fabric and I love how the silhouette looks quite different to my first one which was made with a soft linen.
Same as my first one, I cut a size XS AB cup bodice, graded to S at the waist, and cut a straight size S skirt. The fit and length are perfect. My first Hughes dress gapes between the buttons in the bust when cinched, which means I can’t really cinch it in too much. For this one, I moved the set of lace-up loops at the top to the skirt, which fits my swayback better and allows me to cinch it in a bit more to create a more fitted look. This minor mod did the trick! No pulling at the front! Yay!
The colours of this dress just make me so happy every time I wear it. In the cooler months, I would probably continue to wear it with one of my hand-knitted jumpers or a denim jacket. I’d like to see how this digitally printed fabric age, time will tell!
